Ms. Cheong Sze Ying: Granddaughter of Mr. Wong Shook Phing; daughter of Mdm. Wong Yoke Chan
Inheriting and expanding the family business

Cheong Sze Ying, the granddaughter of Mr. Wong Shook Phing, initially had no intention to inherit the family business. She wanted to pursue her dream as a movie director or perhaps a career in the music industry, both areas in which she excelled in. What changed her mind?

When Sze Ying graduated from high school, her grandfather asked about her future plans. Without hesitation, she answered that she wanted to be a singer. At that young age, Sze Ying did not know what her abilities were apart from singing. She later decided to study broadcasting in film and television in Taiwan. In mid-2006, Sze Ying's grandfather passed away at the age of 89. In November of the same year, Sze Ying graduated and soon started a multimedia production company in partnership with some friends. Not long after, the transition from analog to digital format in media production had a massive impact on the market. Start-up businesses like theirs took a hit, and they suffered financially all while trying their best to gain a foothold in the industry.

In 2010, Sze Ying took on a part-time administrative job in “Peace-One Enterprise (M) Sdn. Bhd.” (the medication brand of WONG SHOOK PHING) while operating her production company. It wasn’t until 2011 that Sze Ying decided to be wholly involved in “Peace-One Enterprise (M) Sdn. Bhd.”. At first, she worked with the mindset of an employee, only accomplishing what had to be done while still thinking of the media career familiar to her. It was a period of uncertainties.

In 2012, Sze Ying wanted to pass on her grandfather's legacy and fully accepted her role as the next generation who would inherit the family business as her own, despite knowing little about managing a business. She also considered her mother, who had dedicated her life to her patients. Wong Shook Phing and Wong Yoke Chan were both "true" medical practitioners who focused little on business development and management. Therefore, Sze Ying felt she could play a role in ensuring that the medical practice had the sustainability to continue on for generations as a Wong family business.

During Mr. Wong Shook Ping’s time, Syarikat Ubat Ching Ann Sdn. Bhd. only provided services of pulse palpation, traditional acupuncture and dispensed herbal prescription. After he passed away, Sze Ying began thinking about restructuring the business model with the hope of continuing her grandfather and mother's hard work. While learning on the job, she gradually understood her goal and direction. Bit by bit, Sze Ying has transformed the business model, focusing on developing heart preservation products. At the same time, she has distributed products of the WONG SHOOK PHING brand to more than 200 TCM shops in Malaysia. As for Syarikat Ubat Ching Ann, more services were introduced to fulfill the treatment needs of customers in areas such as orthopaedic and Tui Na (massage and body work), scrapping, cupping, electrotherapy, etc. She also promoted a heart disease treatment that was introduced by her grandfather and is highly effective. She has collected many patient testimonies with the goal of building the medical hall’s reputation to attract more customers.

As for the company's future vision, Sze Ying hopes to retain her grandfather's wish to further enhance the Traditional Chinese Medicine industry by establishing the WONG SHOOK PHING brand and modernising the medical health centre, as well as researching and developing quality products while providing diversified and specialised services. Sze Ying has also looked into various modern medical treatments, merging Western medical techniques that provide precise judgement with Chinese herbal prescriptions to rehabilitate patients. Such treatment would benefit the patients in a complementary way -- adopting the advantages of Western medical technique while consuming herbal medicine that is free from side effects.

Some might ask, has Wong Shook Phing Medical Health Centre given up on offering “genuine” TCM treatment? The answer is no. We have retained TCM treatments while making adequate adjustments based on the pace of urban life, which has resulted in treatments that give faster results and higher efficacy.
