黄玉珍中医师

A daughter inherits her father's business.

Even after his death, the late Mr. Wong Shook Phing is still known as a virtuous and respectable figure in the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) field. He dedicated his life to promoting Chinese Medicine education, academic research and prompted clinics to provide help and free medication to the poor. When Mr. Wong Shook Phing passed away, his daughter Mdm. Wong Yoke Chan inherited his legacy to continue serving the people.

A father’s profound influence

Wong Shook Phing sent three of his four children for overseas studies during their young age. However, he never asked anything from his second daughter, Mdm. Wong Yoke Chan. When she graduated from secondary school, she felt lost about her future and later picked up TCM under the encouragement of her father.

It was that year when the Malaysian Chinese Medical Association (MCMA) organised the “Chinese Medical Aid Department”. Apart from providing free treatment and medicine for the poor, medical students from TCM Institute got the chance to practice while seeing real patients. This department provided massive learning opportunities for young physicians - including Mdm. Wong Yoke Chan, who gained clinical experiences through here. At that time, she majored in acupuncture, a major with only three students. With three of them being the only volunteers, the work was overwhelming. There was once where she carried out acupuncture treatment to 100 patients within three hours.

Striving for a good reputation and unafraid of being compared

Mdm. Wong Yoke Chan graduated in 1973 after four years of studies. Naturally, she later worked with her father and gained understanding on how he made diagnoses by diligently writing down notes. With the popularity of her father, colleagues of Mr. Wong barely remembered her name; she was only known as the daughter of Mr. Wong Shook Phing. Even now, when people would say Mr. Wong Shook Phing has passed away; others would add, "Wong Shook Phing's daughter is seeing his patients now". Mdm. Wong knew she needed to build a good reputation of her own since in the early years the medical hall relied on word of mouth instead of advertisements to promote its business.

During that time, Mdm. Wong Yoke Chan could only take on new patients when her father was taking a break. Most of the patients only wanted to see Mr. Wong Shook Phing and were even willing to queue for hours. Despite her availability, they were reluctant to seek treatment from a younger physician. Only non-cardiac patients or those unwilling to wait would give Mdm. Wong a chance. However, she never gave up and did not let her father down. Through dedication and hard work she carved out a path for herself specialising in Acupuncture, continuing her father’s legacy - the spirit of benevolence and integrity in her area of expertise.

Pursuing further studies at the age of 45

In one of the great paradoxes of life, young physicians need years of clinical experience to become a trusted and outstanding TCM practitioner; but are often not given the opportunity to prove themselves to patients. It was not an easy path for Mdm. Wong Yoke Chan. Once, she drove from Kuala Lumpur to Klang and took a boat to provide acupuncture treatment for patients. She was pregnant at that time but still insisted on seeing patients around the island.

Mdm.Wong Yoke Chan never stopped learning. With the cultivation and encouragement of her father, she obtained a specialist certificate from the Academy of TCM, specialising in hepatobiliary medicine at the age of 45. During that period, Wong Yoke Chan needed to work and look after her family before she was able to concentrate on her studies. Sometimes she studied from 10pm to 2am and still woke early to see patients the next day. She would burn the midnight oil the day before her exams, and rushed to the examination hall the next morning. After journeying through these arduous times, Wong Yoke Chan successfully became the "Old Chinese Medicine Physician" who patients believed in.

A joyful heart is good medicine.

Mdm. Wong Yoke Chan believed her father had contributed his life to the Chinese Medicine profession of Malaysia. He built the fundamental principles for TCM in Malaysia and cultivated many experienced senior TCM practitioners. He also passed on the knowledge of a simple yet effective health regimen -- 70% full for each meal, and appropriate proportions for breakfast and lunch. Most importantly, he believed that "A joyful heart is good medicine", a saying which he wrote in Chinese calligraphy and placed in his clinic. What he meant here was not only the emotion of joyfulness, but about having a positive attitude while facing difficulties. This Bible proverb describes the attitude and health regimen of Mr. Wong Shook Phing, which is infinitely useful for the younger generation.

"A joyful heart is good medicine" is also the advice Mdm. Wong Yoke Chan gives to her patients. Coupled with a joyful heart and the effectiveness of TCM treatment in eliminating diseases, patients have been able to regain their health. Her father dedicated most of his time to his patients even though he always dreamed of becoming a Chinese painting (国画) artist. He first learnt the art of Chinese painting when he was feeling helpless after being diagnosed with coronary heart disease. Through her father, Mdm. Wong learned to face struggles and illnesses with a positive attitude. And because of that, she spent years learning Chinese calligraphy and writes beautifully today. Not only that, but because of the skills needed for Chinese calligraphy, she has also developed the virtues of patience and high emotional intelligence (EQ) necessary to becoming an excellent physician. She also loves preparing Chinese calligraphy wishes as gifts for friends and relatives during Chinese New Year.

Mdm. Wong Yoke Chan is 71 years old this year. She has inherited her father's knowledge and has more than 50 years of clinical experience. She has earned the respect of many patients. Throughout the years, she has developed many popular Chinese Herbal Medicine for the WONG SHOOK PHING brand, including: Ping Gan Su that enhances liver detoxification and preservation; Gluco Lower Tea that is effective in lowering blood sugar level within seven days, and is suitable for diabetics patients with its appealing taste; Yi Shen Dan that helps to prevent Alzheimer's disease and restores kidney function, and; Hua Tan Wan that helps reduce phlegm and relieve coughs, and is suitable for both adults and children.

Fulfilling her father's wishes

The goal of Mdm. Wong Yoke Chan is to fulfill her father's wishes, which are: treating patients, providing free medication to the poor, cultivating the next generation of TCM practitioners, and preaching the Gospel to patients. All this has nothing to do with fame but with the sole desire to treat patients with sincerity and love. Unlike the early days of Chinese Medicine where full recovery could take a long time, TCM today can cure patients in an efficient and timely manner thanks to modern technology. It is Mdm. Wong Yoke Chan’s desire to see her patients regain their health so that they can live their best life, and fulfill their dreams and goals. Thus, she is inclined to spend more time and effort with every patient, oftentimes acting not only as their doctor but as a true friend - ensuring both their physical and mental health. One day she hopes to write a book, which will be a compilation of the findings and experiences from her years of experience in the medical field. She also wishes to continue developing more products so that out-of-town patients have convenient access to the medicine of the WONG SHOOK PHING brand.
